Root Canal Treatment:
One of our main priorities as dentists is to preserve tooth pulp as much as possible and only resort to root canal treatment when absolutely necessary. Preserving tooth nerves is achieved through regular check-ups and clinical examinations every 6 months.
Using preventive fillings is another method, applied to permanent teeth that emerge in the mouth when a person is 6 years old.
When to Seek Root Canal Treatment:
– If a patient experiences pain when consuming cold foods, sweets, or chewing, it’s advisable to promptly visit a dentist. This allows the dentist to address the pain issue without resorting to root canal treatment.
– If decay reaches the tooth pulp or if there’s a fracture in the tooth that extends to the pulp, resulting in continuous pain, especially during sleep or when consuming hot or cold items, then root canal treatment becomes necessary.
– Sometimes, when dental restorations are being made, it may be necessary to perform a root canal treatment. This decision is made in consultation and coordination between the endodontist (root canal specialist) and the dental prosthetics and cosmetic specialist to prevent future pain after the dental restorations are completed.
The Importance of Root Canal Treatment:
Root canal treatment is the only way to relieve tooth pain while preserving the teeth within the mouth. Its importance lies in eliminating the pain associated with dental issues and preventing the formation of infections and dental abscesses. These complications can lead to facial swelling, fever, and ultimately tooth loss if left untreated.
Stages of Root Canal Treatment:
1- Diagnosis:
Diagnosis is a crucial stage in dental treatment as it helps accurately assess the condition of the teeth. This aids in treating affected teeth and relieving pain as quickly as possible. Diagnostic tools and specialized devices, along with three-dimensional X-rays and magnification tools, assist in this process.
2- Local Anesthesia:
Root canal treatment is always performed under safe local anesthesia, which is recommended by international medical organizations. The anesthesia is administered in light doses that do not adversely affect the health, even for individuals with chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension, or for pregnant women.
3- Tooth Isolation:
The tooth intended for root canal treatment is isolated using a rubber dam barrier. This is done to protect the nerve area from inflammation or blood and to shield the patient’s mouth from swallowing the materials and tools used in the root canal treatment.
4- Complete Decay Removal:
Complete removal of decay and weak parts of the tooth and rebuilding the broken or missing portion of the tooth before starting the root canal treatment. This step ensures cleanliness of the area during the process of cleaning the nerve canals.
5- Determining the Length of the Root Canals:
The number of root canals in teeth varies, ranging from one canal to four canals, and sometimes more. The length of the root canals is accurately determined using specific devices and with the assistance of X-rays. This is to ensure the complete removal and cleaning of the nerve and the entire canal. The canals are continually flushed during the removal process to ensure the complete removal of nerve tissues from the canals.
6- Root Canal Fillings:
This is the final step in the root canal treatment process, where the root canals are dried and filled with a suitable material for the condition.
After completing the root canal treatment, it is often advisable to place posts and crowns (restoration on the treated teeth) to protect the teeth from fracturing.
