Orthodontics
Orthodontics improves the overall appearance and functionality of the teeth. There are several types of orthodontic treatments.
Importance of Orthodontics:
Orthodontics is one of the most crucial methods for treating and protecting the teeth and jaws. It is used to correct the alignment of teeth, enhance dental aesthetics and smile, and address issues with jaw occlusion. Orthodontic treatment works by applying pressure to the teeth and jaws over a period determined precisely by the specialist, based on the patient’s condition. This gradual pressure forces the teeth to move to their correct positions, allowing for the ideal alignment and occlusion of the teeth and jaws.
Benefits of Orthodontics:
1- Beautiful Smile and High Self-Confidence:
2- Ease of Cleaning Teeth
3- Reduced Damage to Teeth and Jaws
4- Straightening and Correcting Crooked Teeth
5- Assists with Speech Issues
6- Addresses Jaw Occlusion Issues
7- Closes Gaps and Corrects Teeth Misalignment
8- Facilitates Easy Cleaning and Maintenance
9- Protects Jawbones from Erosion
10- Expands the Jaws or Adjusts Protruding Front Teeth to Their Natural Position
Preparation for Orthodontic Treatment:
In this stage, the possibility of correcting teeth misalignment and jaw occlusion through orthodontic treatment is evaluated. The orthodontic specialist conducts a comprehensive and thorough examination of the patient’s mouth to ensure there are no existing gum inflammations, tooth decay, or other issues, as all these problems must be resolved before fitting braces. If the patient requires dental implants, it is preferable to start with orthodontic treatment first; this is determined by the specialist.
The process includes taking clinical photographs of the patient’s teeth and panoramic x-rays of the jaws to study the treatment plan. Molds of the teeth are made to create models, and light imaging is used to assess the aesthetic appearance of the face. During this phase, the types of braces are also selected.
Types of Orthodontic Braces:
1- Metal Braces (Conventional Braces):
-These braces are used throughout the entire treatment period and consist of metal brackets and wires. The brackets are directly attached to the surface of each tooth, and medical-grade metal wires connect them. The function of the wire is to move the teeth into their appropriate position and alignment. Regular visits to the orthodontist are necessary to tighten or shorten the wires as needed. The treatment duration for this method ranges from eight to twenty-four months, as determined by the orthodontist based on the patient’s specific needs.
-After the teeth are properly aligned and the jaws are correctly positioned, and once the braces are removed by the specialist, the overall health and condition of the teeth and gums are thoroughly checked.
-Upon completing the treatment period, a mold is made to create a retainer, which helps maintain the health and stability of the teeth and proper jaw alignment. This ensures the final result is preserved, keeping the teeth in their correct position.
2- Clear Aligners:
Clear aligners are a series of computer-designed transparent molds. One of their main advantages is that they can be removed and reinserted as needed.
Clear aligners are the latest and most precise and aesthetic option for aligning teeth and jaws. At the beginning of the treatment plan, the specialist takes a full radiographic image of the patient’s teeth and jaws, studies the case thoroughly, and prepares the aligners according to the patient’s needs. With clear aligners, the specialist can show the patient the entire treatment process and the final result in detail through a video and three-dimensional images from the start of the treatment plan. This process determines the final shape for correcting the teeth and aligning the jaws.
Clear aligners consist of several molds. The teeth are movable, and the patient can wear and remove them independently. Each mold is worn for a specific period determined by the orthodontist based on the case.
The clear aligner applies pressure to the teeth in a specific way to move them to their appropriate position, preparing them for the next mold. This continues until the end of the treatment period, in a scientifically studied, sequential, and harmonious manner.
Characteristics of Clear Aligners:
1- Invisible and Unnoticeable
2- No Metal Components
3- Suitable for All Ages
4- Accurate and Guaranteed Results
5- Reduces the Need for Tooth Extraction
6- Allows Comfortable Eating
7- Enables Easy Teeth Cleaning
After completing the treatment period, a retainer mold is made to maintain the health and stability of the teeth and proper jaw alignment, ensuring the final results are preserved.
The specialist performs several procedures after removing the braces:
-Cleaning and whitening the teeth to remove any traces left by the braces.
-Treating and restoring any damaged teeth if the patient requires additional procedures.
-The specialist prepares a removable retainer to maintain the final shape of the patient’s teeth, ensuring they stay aligned for a long time and allowing the patient to enjoy a beautiful smile and high self-confidence.
